TERM THREE - Week 3
Cook Island Language Week 2019

TAKU RAMA, TAAU TOI: ORA TE REO / MY TORCH, YOUR ADZE: THE LANGUAGE LIVES

Rm 18, along with the rest of the school, had the previlige in participating in yet one of NZ's education diversity incentives, Language weeks. This week was the beautiful Cook Islands.

Our objective this week:
That students will participate in the celebration of the Cook Islands language, in class, around the school and even at home.

It was not only about the students, but that our teachers and staff show our community of love in coming together to acknowledge and learn about the Cook Islands.

We began our week with a reading on Tivaevae.  We were reading for meaning, to understand about a unique tradition of the Cook Islands.

The Margaret Mahy reading group researched further about the Tivaevae and created a little book with the information and facts gathered.

We then integrated Tivaevae into our maths programme, looking at shapes and patterns of the Tivaevae, also being able to reflect, rotate and translate shapes.

As you can see above, we also used what we found out about Tivaevae and the Cook Islands and created some acrostic poems for Writing.

We celebrated the end of Cook Island Language week with some performances

and last but not least the FOOD!

We have had a great experience this week in being able to integrate the Cook Island Language week into our classroom programme of learning.
